Kyrenia (Girne) is North Cyprus's most picturesque town, set between the Kyrenia (Beşparmak) mountains and the sea, with a horseshoe-shaped old harbour guarded by a medieval castle. It is home to several universities, including the University of Kyrenia, Girne American University and Final International University.
Kyrenia is the island's main tourist and expat centre, so it offers the widest choice of restaurants, cafés and beaches, but rents are higher than in Nicosia or Famagusta. The capital is about 25 minutes away.
