Famagusta (Gazimağusa) is a historic port city on the east coast of North Cyprus, built around Venetian walls, the Othello Castle and the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), one of the island's oldest and best-known universities, is based here and gives the city a strongly international, student-centred life.
The city is small, safe and affordable, with long sandy beaches nearby, the ruins of ancient Salamis just to the north and a large community of international and Arab students.
